Economic activity in the backward Kolar region is set to get a boost due to setting up of industrial units and this will help uplift the financial condition of people, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said.
He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for a rail coach factory in Srinivasapur taluk of Kolar district on Wednesday. Railway Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge, who was scheduled to lay the foundation stone, did not attend the programme.
On 1,118 acres
The rail coach factory will come up on 1,118 acres of land. The State government has provided 568 acres for the Rs. 1,460-crore project. The remaining land would be acquired from farmers, the Chief Minister said. As the State government was sharing the project cost with the Railways on a 50:50 basis, it would provide Rs. 730 crore, he said. If the project cost increases, it would be shared equally by the State and the Railways. The factory would generate about 5,000 jobs, Mr. Siddaramaiah said, and suggested to Railway officials to accord priority to local people as well as families that part with their land for the project in recruitment.
A National Investment Manufacturing Zone proposed near Mulbagal would require 12,000 acres of land, Mr. Siddaramaiah said. While a textile park would come up at Sidlaghatta, a food processing unit would be established at Chintamani, he said.
“All these will help augment economic activity and benefit people in the region,” he said.
K.R. Rameshkumar, MLA, presided over the function. Union Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises K.H. Muniyappa and Minister for Infrastructure Development R. Roshan Baig spoke.
District in-charge Minister U.T. Khader, Minister of State for Agriculture C. Krishna Byre Gowda, legislators G. Manjunath, Y. Ramakka, K.M. Narayanaswamy, Nazir Ahmad, Y.A. Narayanaswamy and D.S. Veeraiah, and the former MLC V.R. Sudarshan were among those present.
